October 3, 2023 :: Evening Prayer

Tuesday after the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

Enter not into judgement with thy servant, O Lord, for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. Psalm 143:2.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9.

DEARLY beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of almighty God our heavenly Father, but confess them with a humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart, to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God, yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me,

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent, According to thy promises declared unto mankind In Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy name. Amen.

ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, and hath given power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins: He pardoneth and absolveth all those who truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel; wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer; Versicles

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord.
The Lord's name be praised.

Psalms

Psalm 18. Diligam te, Domine.

1 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my stony rock and my defence; * my Saviour, my God, and my might in whom I will trust; my buckler, the horn also of my salvation, and my refuge.
2 I will call upon the Lord, which is worthy to be praised; * so shall I be safe from mine enemies.
3 The sorrows of death compassed me, * and the overflowings of ungodliness made me afraid.
4 The pains of hell came about me; * the snares of death overtook me.
5 In my trouble I will call upon the Lord, * and complain unto my God.
6 So shall he hear my voice out of his holy temple, * and my complaint shall come before him; it shall enter even into his ears.
7 The earth trembled and quaked; * the very foundations also of the hills shook and were removed, because he was wroth.
8 There went a smoke out in his presence, * and a consuming fire out of his mouth, so that coals were kindled at it.
9 He bowed the heavens also and came down, * and it was dark under his feet.
10 He rode upon the cherubim and did fly; * he came flying upon the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his secret place, * his pavilion round about him, with dark water and thick clouds to cover him.
12 At the brightness of his presence, his clouds removed: * hailstones and coals of fire.
13 The Lord also thundered out of heaven, and the Highest gave his thunder: * hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He sent out his arrows and scattered them; * he cast forth lightnings and destroyed them.
15 The springs of waters were seen, and the foundations of the round world were discovered, at thy chiding, O Lord, * at the blasting of the breath of thy displeasure.
16 He shall send down from on high to fetch me, * and shall take me out of many waters.
17 He shall deliver me from my strongest enemy and from them which hate me, * for they are too mighty for me.
18 They prevented me in the day of my trouble, * but the Lord was my upholder.
19 He brought me forth also into a place of liberty; * he brought me forth, even because he had a favour unto me.
20 The Lord shall reward me after my righteous dealing; * according to the cleanness of my hands shall he recompense me.
21 Because I have kept the ways of the Lord, * and have not forsaken my God, as the wicked doth.
22 For I have an eye unto all his laws, * and will not cast out his commandments from me.
23 I was also uncorrupt before him, * and eschewed mine own wickedness.
24 Therefore shall the Lord reward me after my righteous dealing, * and according unto the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
25 With the holy, thou shalt be holy; * and with a perfect man, thou shalt be perfect.
26 With the clean, thou shalt be clean; * and with the froward, thou shalt learn frowardness.
27 For thou shalt save the people that are in adversity, * and shalt bring down the high looks of the proud.
28 Thou also shalt light my candle; * the Lord my God shall make my darkness to be light.
29 For in thee I shall discomfit an host of men; * and with the help of my God, I shall leap over the wall.
30 The way of God is an undefiled way; * the word of the Lord also is tried in the fire; he is the defender of all them that put their trust in him.
31 For who is God but the Lord? * or who hath any strength except our God?
32 It is God that girdeth me with strength of war, * and maketh my way perfect.
33 He maketh my feet like harts' feet, * and setteth me up on high.
34 He teacheth mine hands to fight, * and mine arms shall break even a bow of steel.
35 Thou hast given me the defence of thy salvation; * thy right hand also shall hold me up, and thy loving correction shall make me great.
36 Thou shalt make room enough under me for to go, * that my footsteps shall not slide.
37 I will follow upon mine enemies and overtake them, * neither will I turn again till I have destroyed them.
38 I will smite them, that they shall not be able to stand, * but fall under my feet.
39 Thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle; * thou shalt throw down mine enemies under me.
40 Thou hast made mine enemies also to turn their backs upon me, * and I shall destroy them that hate me.
41 They shall cry, but there shall be none to help them; * yea, even unto the Lord shall they cry, but he shall not hear them.
42 I will beat them as small as the dust before the wind; * I will cast them out as the clay in the streets.
43 Thou shalt deliver me from the strivings of the people, * and thou shalt make me the head of the heathen;
44 A people whom I have not known * shall serve me.
45 As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me; * but the strange children shall dissemble with me.
46 The strange children shall fail, * and be afraid out of their prisons.
47 The Lord liveth, and blessed be my strong helper, * and praised be the God of my salvation,
48 Even the God that seeth that I be avenged, * and subdueth the peoples unto me.
49 It is he that delivereth me from my cruel enemies, and setteth me up above mine adversaries. * Thou shalt rid me from the wicked man.
50 For this cause will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles; * and sing praises unto thy name.
51 Great prosperity giveth he unto his king, * and showeth loving-kindness unto David his anointed, and unto his seed for evermore.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Tobit 12

Here beginneth the 12th chapter of Tobit.

1 Then Tobit called his son Tobias, and said unto him, My son, see that the man have his wages, which went with thee, and thou must give him more.
2 And Tobias said unto him, O father, it is no harm to me to give him half of those things which I have brought:
3 For he hath brought me again to thee in safety, and made whole my wife, and brought me the money, and likewise healed thee.
4 Then the old man said, It is due unto him.
5 So he called the angel, and he said unto him, Take half of all that ye have brought, and go away in safety.
6 Then he took them both apart, and said unto them, Bless God, praise him, and magnify him, and praise him for the things which he hath done unto you in the sight of all that live. It is good to praise God, and exalt his name, and honourably to shew forth the works of God; therefore be not slack to praise him.
7 It is good to keep close the secret of a king, but it is honourable to reveal the works of God. Do that which is good, and no evil shall touch you.
8 Prayer is good with fasting and alms and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with unrighteousness. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold:
9 For alms doth deliver from death, and shall purge away all sin. Those that exercise alms and righteousness shall be filled with life:
10 But they that sin are enemies to their own life.
11 Surely I will keep close nothing from you. For I said, It was good to keep close the secret of a king, but that it was honourable to reveal the works of God.
12 Now therefore, when thou didst pray, and Sara thy daughter in law, I did bring the remembrance of your prayers before the Holy One: and when thou didst bury the dead, I was with thee likewise.
13 And when thou didst not delay to rise up, and leave thy dinner, to go and cover the dead, thy good deed was not hid from me: but I was with thee.
14 And now God hath sent me to heal thee and Sara thy daughter in law.
15 I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which present the prayers of the saints, and which go in and out before the glory of the Holy One.
16 Then they were both troubled, and fell upon their faces: for they feared.
17 But he said unto them, Fear not, for it shall go well with you; praise God therefore.
18 For not of any favour of mine, but by the will of our God I came; wherefore praise him for ever.
19 All these days I did appear unto you; but I did neither eat nor drink, but ye did see a vision.
20 Now therefore give God thanks: for I go up to him that sent me; but write all things which are done in a book.
21 And when they arose, they saw him no more.
22 Then they confessed the great and wonderful works of God, and how the angel of the Lord had appeared unto them.

Here endeth the first lesson.

Magnificat
My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
2 Corinthians 2

Here beginneth the 2nd chapter of 2 Corinthians.

1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Here endeth the second lesson.

Nunc dimittis
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen * thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all people,
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, The holy catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen.

Collect for Peace

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Other Prayers

A Prayer for All Those in Civil Authority

Almighty God, whose kingdom is everlasting and power infinite: Have mercy upon this whole land, and so rule the hearts of all in authority, [especially —,] that they, knowing whose ministers they are, may above all things seek thy honour and glory; and that we and all the people, duly considering whose authority they bear, may faithfully and obediently honour them, according to thy blessed word and ordinance, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for the Clergy and People

Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our bishops and pastors, and all congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our advocate and mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

When the Legislature Is Assembled

Most gracious God, we humbly beseech thee, as for this nation in general, so especially for the legislature at this time assembled, that thou wouldest be pleased to direct and prosper all their consultations, to the advancement of thy glory; the good of thy church; and the safety, honour, and welfare of this people, that all things may be so ordered and settled by their endeavours, upon the best and surest foundations, that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generations. These and all other necessaries, for them, for us, and thy whole church, we humbly beg in the name and mediation of Jesus Christ, our most blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

A General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we, thine unworthy servants, do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life, but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee, and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy name, thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them, granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

2 Corinthians 13:14

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.
