Saint Matthew the Apostle

Rend your heart and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Joel 2:13.

DEARLY beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of almighty God our heavenly Father, but confess them with a humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart, to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God, yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me,

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent, According to thy promises declared unto mankind In Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy name. Amen.

ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live, and hath given power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins: He pardoneth and absolveth all those who truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel; wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer; Versicles

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord.
The Lord's name be praised.

Psalms

Psalm 95. Venite, exultemus.

1 O come, let us sing unto the Lord; * let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, * and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.
3 For the Lord is a great God, * and a great king above all gods.
4 In his hand are all the corners of the earth, * and the strength of the hills is his also.
5 The sea is his and he made it, * and his hands prepared the dry land.
6 O come, let us worship and fall down, * and kneel before the Lord our maker.
7 For he is the Lord our God, * and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
8 Today if ye will hear his voice – 'Harden not your hearts * as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness,
9 When your fathers tempted me, * proved me, and saw my works.
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation and said, * "It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways",
11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath * that they should not enter into my rest.'
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Psalm 105. Confitemini Domino.

1 O give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon his name; * tell the peoples what things he hath done.
2 O let your songs be of him and praise him, * and let your talking be of all his wondrous works.
3 Rejoice in his holy name; * let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.
4 Seek the Lord and his strength; * seek his face evermore.
5 Remember the marvellous works that he hath done, * his wonders and the judgements of his mouth,
6 O ye seed of Abraham his servant, * ye children of Jacob his chosen.
7 He is the Lord our God; * his judgements are in all the world.
8 He hath been alway mindful of his covenant and promise * that he made to a thousand generations,
9 Even the covenant that he made with Abraham, * and the oath that he sware unto Isaac,
10 And appointed the same unto Jacob for a law, * and to Israel for an everlasting testament,
11 Saying, 'Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, * the lot of your inheritance.'
12 When there were yet but a few of them, * and they strangers in the land,
13 What time as they went from one nation to another, * from one kingdom to another people,
14 He suffered no man to do them wrong, * but reproved even kings for their sakes:
15 'Touch not mine anointed, * and do my prophets no harm.'
16 Moreover, he called for a dearth upon the land, * and destroyed all the provision of bread.
17 But he had sent a man before them, * even Joseph, who was sold to be a bondservant,
18 Whose feet they hurt in the stocks; * the iron entered into his soul.
19 Until the time came that his cause was known, * the word of the Lord tried him.
20 The king sent and delivered him; * the prince of the people let him go free.
21 He made him lord also of his house, * and ruler of all his substance,
22 That he might inform his princes after his will, * and teach his senators wisdom.
23 Israel also came into Egypt, * and Jacob was a stranger in the land of Ham.
24 And he increased his people exceedingly, * and made them stronger than their enemies,
25 Whose heart turned so that they hated his people, * and dealt untruly with his servants.
26 Then sent he Moses his servant, * and Aaron whom he had chosen.
27 And these showed his tokens among them, * and wonders in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness and it was dark, * and they were not obedient unto his word.
29 He turned their waters into blood, * and slew their fish.
30 Their land brought forth frogs, * yea, even in their kings' chambers.
31 He spake the word and there came all manner of flies, * and lice in all their quarters.
32 He gave them hailstones for rain, * and flames of fire in their land.
33 He smote their vines also and fig trees, * and destroyed the trees that were in their coasts.
34 He spake the word and the grasshoppers came, and caterpillars innumerable, * and did eat up all the grass in their land and devoured the fruit of their ground.
35 He smote all the firstborn in their land, * even the chief of all their strength.
36 He brought them forth also with silver and gold; * there was not one feeble person among their tribes.
37 Egypt was glad at their departing, * for they were afraid of them.
38 He spread out a cloud to be a covering, * and fire to give light in the night season.
39 At their desire he brought quails, * and he filled them with the bread of heaven.
40 He opened the rock of stone, and the waters flowed out, * so that rivers ran in the dry places.
41 For why? he remembered his holy promise, * and Abraham his servant.
42 And he brought forth his people with joy, * and his chosen with gladness;
43 And gave them the lands of the heathen, * and they took the labours of the peoples in possession,
44 That they might keep his statutes * and observe his laws.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Sirach 35

Here beginneth the 35th chapter of Sirach.

1 He that keepeth the law bringeth offerings enough: he that taketh heed to the commandment offereth a peace offering.
2 He that requiteth a good turn offereth fine flour; and he that giveth alms sacrificeth praise.
3 To depart from wickedness is a thing pleasing to the Lord; and to forsake unrighteousness is a propitiation.
4 Thou shalt not appear empty before the Lord.
5 For all these things are to be done because of the commandment.
6 The offering of the righteous maketh the altar fat, and the sweet savour thereof is before the most High.
7 The sacrifice of a just man is acceptable, and the memorial thereof shall never be forgotten.
8 Give the Lord his honour with a good eye, and diminish not the firstfruits of thine hands.
9 In all thy gifts shew a cheerful countenance, and dedicate thy tithes with gladness.
10 Give unto the most High according as he hath enriched thee; and as thou hast gotten, give with a cheerful eye.
11 For the Lord recompenseth, and will give thee seven times as much.
12 Do not think to corrupt with gifts; for such he will not receive: and trust not to unrighteous sacrifices; for the Lord is judge, and with him is no respect of persons.
13 He will not accept any person against a poor man, but will hear the prayer of the oppressed.
14 He will not despise the supplication of the fatherless; nor the widow, when she poureth out her complaint.
15 Do not the tears run down the widow's cheeks? and is not her cry against him that causeth them to fall?
16 He that serveth the Lord shall be accepted with favour, and his prayer shall reach unto the clouds.
17 The prayer of the humble pierceth the clouds: and till it come nigh, he will not be comforted; and will not depart, till the most High shall behold to judge righteously, and execute judgment.
18 For the Lord will not be slack, neither will the Mighty be patient toward them, till he have smitten in sunder the loins of the unmerciful, and repayed vengeance to the heathen; till he have taken away the multitude of the proud, and broken the sceptre of the unrighteous;
19 Till he have rendered to every man according to his deeds, and to the works of men according to their devices; till he have judged the cause of his people, and made them to rejoice in his mercy.
20 Mercy is seasonable in the time of affliction, as clouds of rain in the time of drought.

Here endeth the first lesson.

Te Deum laudamus
We praise thee, O God; * we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, * the Father everlasting.
To thee all angels cry aloud, * the heavens and all the powers therein;
To thee cherubim and seraphim * continually do cry,
'Holy, holy, holy, * Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full of the majesty * of thy glory.'
The glorious company of the apostles * praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the prophets * praise thee.
The noble army of martyrs * praise thee.
The holy church throughout all the world * doth acknowledge thee:
The Father * of an infinite majesty;
Thine honourable, true, * and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost, * the Comforter.
Thou art the king of glory, * O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son * of the Father.
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our judge.
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood.
Make them to be numbered with thy saints * in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.
Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we magnify thee,
And we worship thy name, * ever world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, * to keep us this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted; * let me never be confounded.
Matthew 22

Here beginneth the 22nd chapter of Matthew.

1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Cæsar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
27 And last of all the woman died also.
28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.
43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Here endeth the second lesson.

Benedictus
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, * for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us * in the house of his servant David,
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, * which have been since the world began:
That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us,
To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, * and to remember his holy covenant,
To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham: * that he would give us,
That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, * might serve him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him * all the days of our life.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people, * for the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God, * whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.
Athanasian Creed
Whosoever will be saved, * before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith.
Which faith, except every one do keep whole and undefiled, * without doubt he shall perish everlastingly.
And the catholic faith is this: * That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;
Neither confounding the persons, * nor dividing the substance.
For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, * and another of the Holy Ghost.
But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one; * the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.
Such as the Father is, such is the Son, * and such is the Holy Ghost:
The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, * and the Holy Ghost uncreated;
The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, * and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible;
The Father eternal, the Son eternal, * and the Holy Ghost eternal.
And yet they are not three eternals, * but one eternal;
As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated; * but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible.
So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, * and the Holy Ghost almighty.
And yet they are not three almighties, * but one almighty.
So the Father is God, the Son is God, * and the Holy Ghost is God.
And yet they are not three Gods, * but one God.
So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, * and the Holy Ghost Lord.
And yet not three Lords, * but one Lord.
For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity * to acknowledge every person by himself to be God and Lord,
So are we forbidden by the catholic religion * to say there are three Gods or three Lords.
The Father is made of none, * neither created, nor begotten.
The Son is of the Father alone, * not made, nor created, but begotten.
The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son, * neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.
So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; * one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.
And in this Trinity none is before or after other; * none is greater or less than another;
But the whole three persons are coeternal together * and coequal.
So that in all things, as is aforesaid, * the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped.
He therefore that will be saved * must thus think of the Trinity.
Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation * that he also believe rightly the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For the right faith is that we believe and confess * that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man;
God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; * and man, of the substance of his mother, born in the world;
Perfect God and perfect man, * of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting;
Equal to the Father as touching his Godhead, * and inferior to the Father as touching his manhood;
Who although he is God and man, * yet he is not two, but one Christ;
One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, * but by taking of the manhood into God;
One altogether, not by confusion of substance, * but by unity of person.
For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, * so God and man is one Christ,
Who suffered for our salvation, * descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead.
He ascended into heaven; he sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God almighty, * from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead,
At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, * and shall give account for their own works,
And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting, * and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire.
This is the catholic faith, * which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

Collects

Collect of the Day

O almighty God, who by thy blessed Son didst call Matthew from the receipt of custom to be an apostle and evangelist: Grant us grace to forsake all covetous desires and inordinate love of riches, and to follow the same thy Son Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Collect for Peace

O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect for Grace

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power, and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance, to do always what is righteous in thy sight, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Other Prayers

A Prayer for All Those in Civil Authority

Almighty God, whose kingdom is everlasting and power infinite: Have mercy upon this whole land, and so rule the hearts of all in authority, [especially —,] that they, knowing whose ministers they are, may above all things seek thy honour and glory; and that we and all the people, duly considering whose authority they bear, may faithfully and obediently honour them, according to thy blessed word and ordinance, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for the Clergy and People

Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our bishops and pastors, and all congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our advocate and mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

In the Ember Weeks

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who hast purchased to thyself a universal church by the precious blood of thy dear Son: Mercifully look upon the same, and at this time so guide and govern the minds of thy servants, the bishops and pastors of thy flock, that they may lay hands suddenly on no man, but faithfully and wisely make choice of fit persons to serve in the sacred ministry of thy church. And to those who shall be ordained to any holy function, give thy grace and heavenly benediction, that both by their life and doctrine they may set forth thy glory, and set forward the salvation of all men, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive: Receive our humble petitions, and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pity of thy great mercy loose us, for the honour of Jesus Christ, our mediator and advocate. Amen.

When the Legislature Is Assembled

Most gracious God, we humbly beseech thee, as for this nation in general, so especially for the legislature at this time assembled, that thou wouldest be pleased to direct and prosper all their consultations, to the advancement of thy glory; the good of thy church; and the safety, honour, and welfare of this people, that all things may be so ordered and settled by their endeavours, upon the best and surest foundations, that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generations. These and all other necessaries, for them, for us, and thy whole church, we humbly beg in the name and mediation of Jesus Christ, our most blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

A Prayer for All Conditions of Men

O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men, that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for the good estate of the catholic church, that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed, in mind, body, or estate, that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee, and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy name, thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them, granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

2 Corinthians 13:14

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.
